Theme: Mental Health + The Mind

Great minds think alike. Mind over matter. The mind is a terrible thing to waste. So many things have been written about the mind. But those four little letters don't seem to do justice to its complexity. Like an onion, it has an outer skin that acts as a shell, holding everything in and protecting it from the world. Remove the skin, and many layers are within. Peel back some of those layers, delve through the conscious and unconscious parts of ourselves, and you'll likely find tears. Add some warmth, and it will soften. Sprinkle some seasoning and it will shine. And, to be honest, sometimes it just stinks.

So, dive deep and explore what mental health and the mind means to you and your life.

Prompt 1: Write the words that you need to hear when you're at your breaking point.

Prompt 2: According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. lives with a mental illness. That means that you or someone you know has been diagnosed with a mental illness and it has impacted your life in some way. Knowing that, which stigma about mental health would you like to erase? Why?

Prompt 3: Use the photo above as inspiration to write about what mental health and the mind mean to you.

Exercise: Write a poem about your mind. It can be long or short. It can rhyme or not. It can be deep or funny. Just start writing and see where it takes you.
