Scent is a powerful thing. So many of our beautiful past stories are re-engaged by the power of scent.
Sitting around the campfire with good friends and strong whiskey. Falling in love with your best friend. Walking through the forrest in the dead of winter. There is a scent, that triggers a beautiful memory.
Wax Buffalo gets that. We mix the purest American made soy wax, with fine phthalate free essential and fragrance oils, and we pour that creamy mixture over a clean burning cotton wick in the most dreamy vessels we can find. Light a wax buffalo candle, and then sit down and just remember, lose yourself in your story... find the magic again.
1. Why and how did you start your company?
I am a mama. My first baby girl was born with a cleft lip and palate. I think the shock of her birth really forced me to reflect on what was important in my life, at the time I was traveling the world as a TV producer and on air host for a television show called "Footnote". Navy, my daughter, turned my world upside down in a really beautiful way. Her birth forced me to pause and be still, with her as we worked through her treatment, surgery and ultimately her healing. In the process I found candles again. Something I had loved as a child, the art of candle making. It was a great way to center myself, re-align with my own spiritual journey and make something safe and beautiful for my family. Slowly I began to make them for friends and a close friend encouraged me to try selling them. That was three years ago and we are now in 50+ boutiques all across the country. Staying small batch, hand poured and close to our origin we are slowly growing our brand and meeting new folks that believe in safe, natural products for their homes that also bring an element of style to their modernly curated spaces.
2. What is your main mission?
Our main mission is to create beautifully imperfect hand made products for the modern home. Our second mission is to create a space of collaboration and independent work ethics for a team of incredible women seeking to work differently.
3. How do you hope your brand affects women's lives?
One: I think it brings a sense of peace and safety to a ritual that speaks to our souls. The simplicity that burning a candle in your home brings to your surroundings. We evoke memories through scent and we do it with clean pure products that you can feel confident to burn with abandon in your home.
Two: I believe that the way I run our company speaks to the way that modern women want to work. I believe that our families should be intertwined in our passions and workplace. My children come with me on candle adventures and I provide an environment for women that need an alternative schedule or process carved out as a work space that allows them to be home with their children and work when they are able. I find that our company speaks to mama's and students and hipsters and creatives that are smart and creative and driven but are unable to work a classic 9-5 gig. We work early mornings and late nights or one full fifteen hour day. We get a ton done, and we don't believe it all has to happen within a classic work day environment.
4. We love the magic behind your candles as you harness the power of scent and memory. Where do you find inspiration for new scents? How do you tell stories through Wax Buffalo?
Aw thank you! That’s so so kind of you.
Most of the inspiration comes from our adventures. Old, new, big or small. I believe that scent is a powerful thing. So many of our beautiful past stories are re-engaged by the power of scent.
Sitting around the campfire with good friends and strong whiskey. Falling in love with your best friend. The Sweet shop from your childhood summer camp. There is a scent that triggers a beautiful memory.
We try to tell stories through scent. Sometimes we bubble up our own inspiration for those stories through what I call my pretend blog on instagram. Ha ha. I work on these gorgeous candles late at night with a whiskey in hand. I married my crush quite a few years ago, and together we traveled the world telling documentary stories and filming the most beautiful things. Now that I am a mama (to Navy and Satchel and Oxley), I still find ways to use my production background telling beautiful visual stories whenever possible, but I find that wax buffalo has opened an entirely new way for me to tell my stories. It's dreamy and magical and this beautiful world I feel lucky to have fallen into.
5. Clean burning candles are a relatively recent development and one that Wax Buffalo makes a priority. Why is clean burning so important? What are the top three Wax Buffalo candles everyone needs in their cabinet?
Truth. The more I researched clean candles, the more I realized how important it is to the air quality of your home to ensure that you’re not burning a petroleum based product, as well as low quality fragrance that can hurt you and your family.
Oooooo the top three!? That’s super tough! They are all so great.
Sweet tobacco is our classic one of our first and it’s dreamy.
Into the Woods has a really special place in my heart. It’s heady and warm and earthy. I wear it too!
