1. Why and how did you start to eat + to love?
to eat + to love was born out of my own life story and some experiences I had with health in my early twenties. I had come out of college really, really focused on being the consummate professional and I had truly believed that that meant working a lot of hours, self-sacrificing for the good of the job, and saying “yes” to every opportunity out there.
But my body really wasn’t keeping up with that - working too many hours also meant not sleeping; always saying yes meant skipping meals - and in the long run, I ended up burnt out. And unfortunately, I didn’t really notice that I was burnt out until I had a series of issues, and eventually passed out on a subway in NYC while on a business trip.
The idea for to eat + to love wasn’t created immediately though - that came a little bit later, actually.
Once I really realized that I needed to stop putting my self-care on the back burner, I really dove into nutrition and health, and I ended up trying TONS of stuff.
And I got really, really frustrated! I felt like every program I tried just wasn’t right for me. I couldn’t commit the time. I dreaded some of the foods. I got a lot more down on myself and my body. It was expensive. And every time I turned around there was some new study out there that showed that this food was not better than this food and that that food really isn’t good for you anymore and blah blah blah!
I finally just decided that there had to be a better way to look at healthy eating and decided to find what that was for myself! And once I did, the idea that every woman needed an opportunity to find a plan that worked for herself really struck me. And that’s how I came up with to eat + to love.
2. What is your main mission?
My mission is to make health and nutrition so much more relatable attainable to people lives - especially busy women!
The health industry is really overwhelming and when it comes down to it, most of us can’t be that It girl who spends 2 hours at the gym a day, and instagrams all of her perfect smoothie bowls. And it's not because being that is bad! But realistically speaking, a lot of women, including myself, just can’t commit to overhauling our lives enough to make that happen.
For women like us, there HAS to be a way to eat reasonably well within the context of our own lives - a way that works for us. And that’s what my program helps women find.
3. How do you hope your brand affects women's lives?
I really want my brand to empower women to believe that healthy is possible in so many contexts and so many ways. You don’t have to have time to make pretty smoothie bowls every morning or chicken breast and Brussel sprouts every night in order to get healthy. Healthy can mean so many things to so many people, and it CAN work for you - we just need to figure out how.
4. What are the most common barriers that the people you work with are overcoming in order to work towards health?
Because busy, career women are my typical audience, most of the barriers I hear about involve our environments - not enough time to be healthy, too many temptations in the break room or at happy hours, and eating for stress or other emotional reasons.
This is really important to talk about, because this is where a lot of people have difficulty in maintaining healthy regimens. The way I see it, most women join healthy programs for the structure and the regimen of it. They join because they’re saying “I want to do this, but I need somewhere to start.”
But a lot of healthy programs go one of two ways: they are either really specific - you eat this at this time - or they let you choose your food with specific rules - no breads, high protein, use this recipe book etc. But here’s the thing - if you don’t have time to prepare that exact meal that you are supposed to eat, if you don’t have the time to sit down and plan your meals, then shop, then cook, or if your regimen doesn’t include happy hours or what to do at a work party, then you start hitting roadblocks every single work week. I mean, one late night at the office, or one weekend of missing prep and planning, or one ice cream night after a bad day, and you feel like you’re back at square 1.
And that really sucks mentally! - but here’s the other problem with constantly being in that position: you can believe in any diet in the world - paleo, mediterranean, low-carb - but if you can’t actually find a way to work those lifestyles into your life, then they aren’t helpful to you! So we HAVE to find a way to make it work for people.
That’s where my goal comes in - I want to say “ok, let’s figure out your happy hour strategy. Or let’s figure out a no-prep strategy. Or let’s figure out what else might work for you specifically.”
5. We love what you're doing because you simultaneously promote health and body positivity. What's one takeaway that you want your clients to take away regarding the health of their bodies?
I want people to truly believe that health is about keeping our bodies running for all of the amazing things that we are meant to do! It’s not about abs, or skinny jeans, or perfect selfies - those are some cool side effects maybe - but the real win is feeling awesome, having the energy to knock the world dead, and knowing that you are doing your best for yourself.
