1. Why and how did you start Fringe & Fitness?
I started Fringe and Fitness because I had found something that I loved, I had found a way to make myself a priority amidst the chaos of bringing home a new baby and figuring out my new life as a mom. I was 6 weeks postpartum and headed back to my full time job desperate for a way to find routine and get my body back and feel good about the person I was seeing in the mirror. So Fringe and Fitness began in the summer of 2015 and has been growing and shifting ever since. It was created out of a need for myself to make sure I didn’t get lost in being a mom and a passion to help other women live healthy and thriving lifestyle. I wanted to create a safe space and place for moms and busy women to come when they felt like they have reached the edge of the rope and were ready for a change, ready to make themselves and their health a priority.
2. What is your main mission?
My mission is to make sure moms and busy women are making themselves a priority within the chaos that life throws at us. We cannot be fully present and alive in all that we do without pouring into ourselves each day. I want women to know they are not alone in this process and they are worthy of self-care.
3. How do you hope Fringe & Fitness affects women’s lives?
I hope it affects women in the most inspiring way. We have so far to go in women knowing their worth, there is so much negative self-talk, negative self-image, and a basic lack of awareness and urgency toward changing the mindset around our health and our worth when it comes to self-care. As women and especially moms, we always put everything and everyone before ourselves, when the truth is that we must be putting into ourselves in order to give our best to those around us. My mission is to change the view and idea of self-care to be non-negotiable instead of a luxury.
4. We love the idea of a self-care love language. Could you tell us a little bit more about what these are and why it's important to find your own?
Your self-care love language is how you feel most cared for, energized and vibrant in your day to day life. It’s the things that truly light you up. We all have a different idea on what self-care is and means to us on a day to day basis, so by discovery your unique love language you can do the things that make you feel most alive, take the guesswork out of what kind of self-care you should be doing and save time and frustration waiting your precious time on things that aren’t truly boosting your self-care. This idea is so important because what one person finds relaxing another can find totally repelling. So some women may love a massage and some may totally despise being touched and find that repulsive. You have to focus on the things that really mean the most to you, your personality and your lifestyle in order to make this as simplistic and natural as possible, therefor taking the stress out of adding one more thing to your to-do list.
5. What do you think are some of the most common barriers to people practicing self-care and what are your recommendation for overcoming these?
The absolute most common is the nasty word GUILT. We feel guilty about taking time and resources away from our family for personal reasons and expenses. We feel like there are so many other things that need our attention it is selfish of us to make any time for ourselves. There of course are many other reasons and deeper issues behind this guilt, but the best way to overcome this is to really know and understand that without self-care and without being conscious of your health and your body you are doing more harm than good. If you are not being a bit “selfish” and taking time to make self-care and important part of your life, you are not only teaching your children the same things, but in time you will end up with health issues now beyond your control. Stress is literally an epidemic, leading to a long list of health issues that can and will end you up in a hospital bed. Self-care and what I teach is giving you the tools to manage these stresses and be proactive instead of reactive to the things that happen on a daily basis when we are juggling five million things. It all boils down to changing the way you think about self-care. You DESERVE IT!
