One Year Ago

[dropcap]O[/dropcap]ne year ago, on June 1, 2015, I hit publish for the very first time on Holl & Lane Magazine.  I hit publish and then I waited.  I waited to hear a reaction, a good one or a bad one (though I was expecting the latter).  I waited to see where this new journey would take me.  I waited to find out if all of the hard work of the past few months had been worth it.

Spoiler alert: It was.

Holl & Lane Magazine came to me as an idea years and years ago, though without the specifics.  I wanted a magazine of my own.  I wanted to design it and make it exactly what I wanted it to be.  And I'm proud to say that that idea became a reality on June 1, 2015.

Running a business is not an easy thing, no matter what kind of business you have.  There are expenses and headaches and plans to be made that you never expected.  I've said many times, when the frustrations hit me, that "I just want to design pretty things for people to read!".  But that isn't a business.  A business is all of the other things that are involved - paying bills, managing teams, dealing with problems.  But running a business is a lot more, too.  It's putting your hard work out into the world and seeing the rewards from it.  It's hearing from readers who tell you how much they value what you do.  It's making a difference, even in a tiny way, in someone else's life.

If I've learned anything in the past year, it's that I'm stronger than I had ever known I was.  I've faced setbacks and challenges and profit loss and disappointments.  I've faced having the door shut in my face, or worse, being completely ignored.  But it's one year later and I'm still standing and I'm feeling the resolve to keep this going more than ever.  And it's because of people like you (you, the one reading this right now).  You are the reason that I keep going, I keep fighting.  Even on the days where I just want to throw in the towel, admit that it's too hard.  I keep going because you believe in Holl & Lane like I do.  And knowing that is worth more than you'd believe.

So in the past year, we've changed a lot.  We've gotten new team members and said goodbye to old team members.  We refocused our magazine to just life, home, and kitchen.  We've begun selling printed copies.  And as of today (!!!), we're selling printed subscriptions at your request.  All of these milestones have been enough to keep me going and to breathe new life into Holl & Lane.  We are not a household name, I'm barely covering my expenses each month, and I have yet to pay myself or any of my team for all of their hard work.  But damn if it isn't exciting still the same.

This is my dream.  And it's now a reality.  Thank you for being along for the ride.

xo, Sarah Holl & Lane, Editor in Chief

PS - To my team: I've told you time and time again that I would not be where I am without you, and I mean that completely.  You are the reason I'm able to do this.  Thank you for being here with me, for working your ass off, and for being my friend and family.  You are the unsung heroes behind the scenes.
